Podcast Blog

In my English 101 class we had a special quest name David. David was invited to have a discussion with our class about our recent classwork. He wanted to know from each member of the class if climate change was something we have thought about prior to taking the class. He was also interested in the letter we wrote to Mayor De Blasio about climate change. He wanted to know what it said and what our argument was. He asked about the book Zeitoun we just finished reading and our experiences with Hurricane Sandy. I was not in New York at the time of Sandy, but according to David he was one of the lucky ones whose power never went out. He was able to enjoy himself by watching Netflix films while others were not so lucky. I have learned a lot in this English class and before the class I heard nothing about climate change. It was not something I thought about at all.
I was amazed and at the same time shocked to have learned so much about the matter. It’s sad that it took having a storm like Sandy to open people’s eyes to the situation. In my letter to Mayor De Blasio I argued about the city not being prepared for climate change and mostly because the city has no knowledge of the issue. How can anyone prepare for something they know nothing about? Reading the book Zeitoun was interesting for me because it’s the kind of book you read and can’t wait to get to the end. There are many lesson we can learn from Zeitoun’s experiences. The book touched bases on military neglect and racial profiling which are major issues some people are still facing. Overall I loved the class agenda because I gained a lot of knowledge from it. It opened my eyes to many serious situations.

Blog 5 revising based on blog 4 comments

I don't believe New York's response to Hurricane Sandy was adequate because the storm appeared October 22 and they didn't begin with emergency plans until the 28th leaving people homeless. While they were trying to fix the city by making repairs such clearing up the streets, fixing train paths and rebuilding government facilities to ensure they will continue to gain and make profits, people were left wondering when will we get the assistance we need. We can relate this to the Shock Doctrine's "Blanking The Beach" where Naomi Klein focuses on the disasters people faced during a tsunami in 2005. We learn that militarized gentrification played a big role in the people's experiences. When I say militarized gentrification I mean leaders and government officials  ability to take over with no regards for the people who are their. They will not give a thought to other people's needs other than their own. The leaders of Sri Lanka accused "their elected representatives of abandonment, corruption and spending aid money meant for fishing people on dowries for their daughters and jewelry for their wives"(Klein 68). In other words instead of using aid money to help people in need, they would take that money and spend it on themselves and their families. A lot of people suffered because they were not on the list of importance. As long as the things that keep money flowing in their pockets were ok, they could care less. What they don't realize is the people they are refusing to give the proper assistance to are the same people who keeps the city in business. You could fix a million places and build new sites without the people they tend to throw under the rug, they will not gain or make much profit at all.

Explaination of a graph.

In this blog I would be explaining a graph and given my personal opinion about it. First, I will tell you what the graph represents. The graph shows the amount of anti-Islamic hate crime incidents between 1995-2008. The rate of crime incidents ranged from 21-32 between 1995-2000. The rate however skyrocketed to 481 in 2001. In 2002 he rate went back down to 155 from there it started a trend of going up and down. For example in 2003 it was down at 149 by 2004 it went back up to 156 and than the following year it goes down again and than back up. We can relate this to Zeitoun where this chart points out race. Why couldn't it just be hate crime incidents among all race, not anti-Islamic or black, Hispanic. Zeitoun was a Muslim man detained suspected of being a terrorist. They thought he was working with AL Quaeda. He was mistreated for being himself basically. I don't believe for a second a white man would have been treated in such manner. It goes to show that you have to be careful being in your own skin because you can be accused of doing things you probably wouldn't even think of because you are different.

Military neglect

I believe Zeitoun was facing a case of military neglect. When I say military neglect I mean his rights and plea for help was being disregarded. As he is searching for help to assist an elderly woman stuck in her house he noticed an fan boat of military officials. He waving and calling for help but they ignored him. One example is when Zeitoun is when the officer took his ID and gave it back to without looking and he is pushed towards the door. An officer yells, "get in the boat"(206). They were being yelled at to enter the boat without any knowledge of what was going on. I believe they had the right to know why they were being detained and thy shouldn't have treated them the way they did. We can also see the idea of military neglect occurring in another important moment in the text. They are trying to figure out who these people are and thought the situation would be explained once they got to their destination but they stopped and turned of the engine of the boat. Zeitoun  tackled and thrown to the ground still wondering what was happening. They pushed his face into dirty soaked grass while an officer knee was tight on his back and their hands on his knees. They were all yelling at him  and cursing him "Don't move asshole"(208). He was unable to move a muscle.

What I think of Zeitoun

I believe Zeitoun was selfish when it came to his family. While his Wife was trying to get him to leave the area, he refused putting his family last. In the book "Zeitoun" Edggers talk about Zeitoun's and his families experiences during hurricane Katrina. Zeitoun is a stubborn man who disregard what his wife was telling him by saying "this is not the storm for us"(Eggers 22). In other words he was saying the storm is not coming their way and nothing is going to happen. I think he should have left despite what he thought would or wouldn't happen for his wife and kids sake.

My name is Sandra. In this blog I will be explaining why New York City response to hurricane Sandy was insufficient. It turned out to be a devastating tragedy. New York City faced a lot of challenges and setbacks because there was too much flooding. A lot of places was shut down and they had trouble with evacuations because of their inability to begin with their emergency plans before the storm hit. In Sandy Story line interviews Cassel says "Howard beach had never seen a flood in a hundred years. I was unable to get back in to the area. The car I left there was destroyed and I had to redo all my electrical wiring"(Stuck in the system). Basically Cassel is saying the impact of the storm left many people including himself in a devastating tragedy which indicates it caused suffering, distress and the city was highly destructive. It is very important to take immediate actions in these types of situations because it can reduce the amount of challenges you face in the aftermath of a disastrous storm.

I don't believe New York's response to Hurricane Sandy was adequate because the storm appeared on October 22 and they didn't begin with emergency plans until the 28th, leaving people hopeless. In the chapter Blanking The Beach they mention militarize gentrification which indicates they would take over with no regards for the people who are there. New York city did not do enough to help the people. They were only concern about their own profit and gains. It is important because a lot of people suffer because of their inability to give people the proper assistance they needed. They are throwing people under the bus for their own personal gain. They don't care who is hurt as long as they can profit from it.

Flooding still poses a great threat. Is New York city prepared for it? I believe new York city is doing the best they can preparing flood damages. In the Times article Navaro writes "the transit agency to spent $34 million on improvements like raising some ventilation grates nine inches above sidewalks and building steps that head upward, before descending, at flood-prone stations" (Navaro).
My name is Sandra. In this blog I will be  describing the feedback I received from my peer review paper. Nazeen  said she loved the paper and how detailed it was but, I should include more of my personality into the paper. She suggested I add more detail from the book and maybe include a quotation sandwich. Sanjida notice that I repeated some details. I plan on taking their advice and adding or deleting information they thought would help my paper. My biggest concern about the paper would be being unable to incorporate everything I have to, to get an A paper. I think the teacher was pretty clear on what to do. I just need to be more sure of myself.

My name is Sandra. In this blog I will be explaining two graphs. In the first graph it shows temperature change from 1900c beginning from 1850 to 2020. The gray line shows hadley centre, the dark line shows natural climate data center and the dotted lines shows GISS. in the second graph it shows how the temperature has gone up from 1900 through the years of 2010. The dark line  with the circle in the middle represent rice models-2010. The very dark dotted line with the shaded square shows emf-22 models and the lines A1B, A2, B1 and B2 represents emissions. For example  graph two shows the global temperature increase from 1900c to 2100 to be between 1.8 and 4.0. These models are used to compare changes that may occur  in the following years.

My Name is Sandra and in this blog I am responding to an assignment in my English 101 class relating to, a New York times article about climate change. The article explains some of the concerns and how New York is not prepared for flood risk among rising seas. There's a likelihood rising seas will have more severe storms. In the article critics says the state is not up to speed with possible dangers of flooding.
The mayor has ordered research to be done and prepare installation of green roof to absorb water and advising property owners about removing boilers from basements, but according to Douglas Hill, the state of New York have no sense of urgency as far as being prepared for these situations. Some concerns for places such as the south Bronx and Sunset Park which have waterfronts with chemical plants, oil-storage and garbage can have people walking in dangerous waters. The city needs to address the possibility of rising seas before beginning projects and enforcing regulations.
It is estimated by Con Edison to cost about 25 million dollars to add submersible switches and high voltage transformers, while some New York planners consider using retractable watertight gates for windows in new buildings. Some believe prevention is the key to the problem, some insist on getting sea gates, but at some point aren't these sea gates going to fail as the sea level continue to rise?
Jim Gordon believes in order to ensure our health we need to transform clean and renewable energy. Using billions to build sea gates without trying to bine the way carbon pollution is picking up in speed and rising sea levels is like putting a bandage on the wound without treating it. I agree with Jim because it doesn't make sense to spend so much money building sea gates while the sea level is still rising. The sea gates as some point won't work. It makes sense take care of the problem at hand instead of just treating the symptoms and not the actual problem itself.

In page four the book The Climate Casino. The Author Mr. Nordhaus mentioned  the sources of global warming as far as burning fossils which produces carbon dioxide gases such as CO2  called greenhouse gases which builds up around us and it doesn't go away. It causes change every where around us such as in the temperature and the atmosphere.
I find it interesting and also agree with what he is  because it only cause for concerns. It's only going to cause more issues such as temperatures that provide greater threats, water and rivers issues. The changes are critical to the our surroundings. It would have a huge impact on people. I also think people need to also be more aware of  the problems when it comes to the changes.
